Experience:
Reed Witherby was Articles Editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review. He served as law clerk to the Hon. Frank M. Coffin of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. From 1982 to 1989, he was an Assistant Attorney General in the Government Bureau of the Massachusetts Attorney General's office.
Mr. Witherby has extensive experience presenting and defending civil cases, including constitutional law cases, in trial and appellate courts. He is a member of the bar of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, several United States Courts of Appeals including the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Witherby served as Special Counsel to the Massachusetts Senate Redistricting Committee for redistricting the Massachusetts Congressional and Senatorial districts following the 2000 Census.
Mr. Witherby taught a seminar on voting rights law in 2001 as an Adjunct Professor at Northeastern University School of Law. Also in 2001, he presented a talk on minority vote dilution analysis at the National Conference of State Legislatures Redistricting Seminar in Dallas, Texas. He is the co-author (with Paul A. Lazour) of "Redistricting in Massachusetts," chapter 10 in Massachusetts Election Administration, Campaign Finance and Lobbying Law (P. Sturges, ed., MCLE 2000).
Mr. Witherby concentrates his practice in the litigation of issues involving public law, including administrative and constitutional law, with a particular interest in voting rights. Mr. Witherby is a member of the firm's litigation and public law practice areas, and he heads the firm's appellate practice and voting rights practice areas.
